The Mason family name has long been associated with Hotels in Canterbury. I, Henry Mason am the current joint owner, and the fourth generation to offer hospitality and accommodation to guests wishing to stay in Canterbury.
| The story begins in 1910 when Frank Mason, my great grandfather, started
work at the University Arms Hotel in Cambridge. In 1920 having decided he
wanted to run his own hotel, he bought The County Hotel in Canterbury, which
he ran with his wife, firstly through the great Depression, and later the
Second World War. Almost all of the Canterbury hotels were closed at this
time, and as a result of Frank's endeavours in clearing incendiary canisters
from the roof of his Hotel - sweeping them onto the streets below - the
Hotel survived! Frank's son Peter, my grandfather, took over the running of The County Hotel in 1949 and developed the Hotel in size, and scope with great success. My father, Anthony, joined the company in 1959 having trained in the famous Ecole Hôtelière de Lausanne, and worked alongside his father, again increasing capacity to 85 bedrooms and rejuvenating the banqueting business, until The County Hotel Canterbury was sold. |

| Anthony, and my mother, Jane, bought the 15 bedroom Ebury Hotel Canterbury, which opened to their first guest - A Frenchman on a bicycle wearing the proverbial beret - in 1979. The hotel, an elegant Victorian building circa 1840, had initially been two private houses, and latterly flats, and a school called St Ninians. Having successfully run the hotel, and adding the indoor swimming pool, and the first phase of self-catering cottages, the Ebury Hotel has now passed to the next generation. | ![]() Anthony and Jane |

| I now run the Ebury Hotel with my wife Alison, both having
graduated from Westminster College, London, and we are ably assisted by
Simon Roberts. The site now has 8 self-catering cottages and 2 self-catering
flats, with further expansion planned. We are not sure if either of our
children Jack, or Beth will follow in our footsteps, however, there does
seem to be a hotelkeeping gene in the Mason family. We look forward to welcoming you to our hotel, and hope you enjoy a pleasant stay with us. |
